Valve Stem Seals

International, Inc.® offers an extensive range of High Quality Valve Stem Seals that are designed and manufactured using the highest quality materials to include Teflon®, Viton™, Nitirile, Polyacrylate & Silicon. In modern day engines, a Positive Valve Stem Seal plays a critical roll in metering oil precisely. For this reason, Positive Valve Stem Seals are designed to precisely lubricate the Valve Stem and Valve Guide Bore by allowing a small amount of oil to pass through the contact lip (metering) based on the engines design requirement. If too little of an amount of oil is metered through the contact lip of the seal, the potential for Valve Stem Scuffing and/or Seizure can occur. If too much oil is metered through the contact lip of the seal, excessive oil will impact the Emission Controls negatively and allow excessive deposits to build up on the valve causing loss of engine power and potential engine failure. SBI Designs and Manufactures each Positive Valve Stem Seal to perform as intended based on the OEM Requirement and for your needs. SBI offers Valve Stem Seals in many Styles and Sizes for both Aftermarket designs and Direct OEM Replacement designs. Below is a brief explanation of available styles. This listing will enable the installer to find a seal by size and by type of seal required.

 

  • NOTE: The practice of selecting seals in this manner should be considered a "last resort" exercise when no other listing can be found. The materials used in today's Emission Controlled Gas and Diesel Engines are specifically selected to provide the best performance under all operating conditions. Often the materials and the Oil Metering Lip will differ from intake to exhaust even though the size specifications are the same. It is for these reasons we recommend that the application section be checked for these application specific situations before selecting seals by stem size only.

 

Explanation Of Available Styles

All Teflon® Seals

Can be used in high temperature applications. Cannot be used without guide O.D. and Cannot be used with oversized valve stems.

Positive Seals - All Rubber

No rings or bands. Very forgiving of guide O.D. variations. Low temperature applications. Can also be used with up to 0.015" oversize valve stems.

Positive Seals - Top Hat Style

Latest OEM style resembles a top hat in appearance. Incorporates valve spring seat in the seal carrier body. Often attaches to the guide for positive location. Excellent oil control properties. Can also be used with up to 0.003" oversize valve stems.

Positive Seals - Ring And Band

Less forgiving of guide O.D. variations. Can also be used with up to 0.015" oversize valve stems.

Positive Seals - 1 Ring And 2 Ring 

Very forgiving of guide O.D. variations. Can be used with oversize valve stems.

Ring-Spring

Positive Seals - Ring And Spring 

Very forgiving of guide O.D. variations. Uses garter spring for oil control. Excellent oil control properties. Can also be used with up to 0.015" oversize valve stems.

Positive Seals - Metal Clad 

Not forgiving of guide O.D. variations. Uses garter spring for oil control. Excellent oil control properties. Can also be used with up to 0.003" oversize stems.

O-Ring

Breaks up oil flow down valve stem. Acts as "oil shedder". Works best when combined with umbrella seals. Can be used with oversize valve stems. Used in push rod engines only.

Umbrella-Shield

 Deflector Seal - Umbrella Style

Deflector Seals, also known as Umbrella Seals, deflect oil away from the valve stem. This type of seal is secured by interference to the valve stem and move with the valve to shield the valve guide from excessive oil.

Oil-Shield

Deflector Seal - Oil Shield Style

Also a type of deflector seal and very similar to the Umbrella Style, These are typically found on Agricultural and Industrial Diesel Engine applications and are mated and fixed to the Valve Retainer/Rotator and shield the valve guide from excessive oil.
